Our Journey Together Starts Here

A Little About What We Do

Our Mission:

The Gentle Touch Doulas believe that every woman deserves a doula. Our mission is to provide a supportive and safe environment for a woman to give birth. We agree to give unconditional emotional, physical, and informational support to every woman regardless of her choices for childbirth. We hope to provide our doula-supported families a constant calming presence during labor. As professional certified doulas we want every family to experience the birth process as a safe, empowering and memorable rite of passage.

What is a Doula?

"Doula" refers to a supportive companion (other than a friend or loved one) who is professionally trained to provide labor support. A doula performs no clinical tasks. "Doula" also refers to laypersons that are trained or experienced in providing postpartum care, mother and newborn care, breastfeeding support and advice, cooking, childcare, errands, and light cleaning - for the family. To distinguish between the types of doulas, one may refer to "birth doulas" and "postpartum doulas."

A Doula Provides:

  • Physical, emotional, and informational support to women and their partners during labor and birth.
  • Help and advice on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, massage and positioning.
  • Assistance to families in gathering information about the course of their labor and their options.
  • Continuous emotional reassurance and comfort; non-medical skills such as massage and other non-pharmacological pain relief measures.
  • Assistance to partners who want to play an active support role.
  • Help so the woman has a safe and satisfying childbirth as the woman defines it.

A meeting is set with the Doula to become acquainted and discuss your priorities and desires. We will review any childbirth education and design a personal birth plan. Once contracted, the Doula will be on call as your due date approaches. Constant phone support is available. There will always be a backup Doula on call as well. Because we are a team of Doulas, we can guarantee that you will not be alone. Once mom is in labor, we are by your side until after the baby's birth. We stay 1-2 hours after the birth or until mom is comfortable with our leaving. A follow up visit, as well as phone support when needed, completes the service.

Labor Doula Service

  • A Doula does not interfere with, or replace labor partner, but instead works with him/her to create a strong and supportive team.
  • A Doula does not leave Mom, giving consistent support. Labor partner can take a break, get something to eat, make calls, etc, without worrying about mom being left alone.
  • A Doula helps keep Mom calm with relaxation, massage, acupressure, and emotional support. Educational support is also a major factor in keeping the laboring couples calm and informed.
  • If your labor partner forgets the technique, the Doula refreshes labor partner's memory to enable him/her to be effective for mom.
  • The Doula can be contracted to help moms who may not have a labor partner available.
  • If mom desires an un-medicated birth, the help of a Doula greatly increases the chances of her success.
  • The success of a VBAC (Vaginal Birth after Cesarean) is higher. The Doula helps in significant ways, protecting your experience and acting as your advocate and providing support for mom, labor partner, and family members.
  • If you decide to use medications, the Doula will fully inform you of all the options so you can make the best decision for your personal needs.

Our fees for certified doulas are set each December for the following year. Each doula sets her own prices for additional services. We offer Free consultation prior to decision about using our services. Our fees include:

  • Information needed to make informed decisions about the upcoming birth
  • Assistance in achieving skin to skin care and breastfeeding
  • Phone call followup after birth
  • Predelivery consultations
  • Birth vision development
  • Education

Payment Assistance:

Fees are based on the experience of the doula and the going rate in the area. However, most doulas will work with you, set up a sliding scale, or payment plans to help those who can't afford a doula. So, do not let this keep you from hiring a doula. Just contact us and we will go over all the information. Clients may also want to check their flex spending account policies for further payment assistance.
